Fireplace: Michael Gammond
Forest of Dean Stone Firms Ltd has crafted and supplied an ornate Pennant sandstone fireplace for a newly renovated bungalow in Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire. Homeowners, Mr and Mrs Gammond were inspired by a fireplace made by the company for Mr Gammond’s father more than 60 years ago (pictured above).
The couple visited the stone company at Parkend in the Forest of Dean to discuss their requirements with commercial manager, Paul Ramsey.
“Mr and Mrs Gammond were the perfect customers. They arrived armed with detailed measurements and knew exactly what they wanted. As well as taking inspiration from a fireplace we supplied over 60 years ago, they also wished to retain the granite back panel of the bungalow’s existing fire surround,” commented Paul.
To accommodate the back panel the fireplace had to evolve from the original design. The couple took further inspiration from a miniature fireplace displayed in the company’s reception area.
Before finalising the design, Paul Ramsey and Forest of Dean Stone Firms’ designer, Will Jennings visited the property to measure for the rebated jambs.
“It’s not something we normally do but on this occasion we had to be 100% sure that the rebates were in the right position for the jambs to fit over the granite back panel and fix to the wall. Will then created a CAD drawing which generated templates for our bankermasons,” continued Paul.
Forest of Dean Stone Firms also suggested another tweak to the original design – inverting the scroll carving. It was agreed that this made for a more balanced design given the new dimensions and addition of a mantelpiece.
Speaking about his experience with the stone specialist and his new fireplace, Mr Gammond said:
“It was a pleasure to deal with everyone at Forest of Dean Stone Firms. Regarding the actual finished fireplace, we are very pleased; all of our friends have admired it.”
